||||
| What the book is about: | |||||
| This is one of a group of books on Networking by Henderson and with 366 Networking Tips, that’s one for each day of the year (even on a leap year).Individuals tend to network on an ad hoc basis but in order to be effective our networking needs to be consistent. Here we are provided a twelve month networking plan.
By providing a month by month plan throughout the year this book maintains a steady flow of energy to negate unnecessary highs and lows. The exercises and reviews allow us to test and measure different methods of networking and to set expectations in order to refine our networking skills. The monthly plan including thoughts about Christmas cards and the celebration of other diverse cultural events throughout the year is a great idea. |

| Even in today’s high tech world a lot of business is still done face to face. Here is a simple resource for those occasions. | |||||
| What I liked about this book: | |||||
| It really was a resource full of useful tips. Some we may be practicing already but reminders are always great.The monthly “self networking tracker” table was simple but effective. | |||||
| What I thought could have been improved in this book: | |||||
| It may seem obvious but I would have included a weekly self networking tracker table. Most people will do this anyway but as there are so many tips in the book It could be overlooked initially. | |||||

| Would I buy this book: |
YES |
||||
| A great book for all small business owners to remind them of the basics. | |||||
| What I liked about this book: | |||||
| The old adage that facts tell and stories sell is brought home here in the way the story simply gets across the basic business principles. | |||||
| What I thought could have been improved in this book: | |||||
| The indexing system in the book could benefit from more information.Although the six steps are split down into a form of index at the back of the book, a more detailed index would have made the book easier to navigate. | |||||

| Title: | Employed But Not Engaged | ||||
| Author: | Michael Smyth is a barrister currently practicing employment law in New Zealand. He is also the owner of approachablelawyer.com | ||||
| Category: |
|
||||
| What the book is about: | |||||
| This New Zealand book is a practical guide to getting the right people in the right job and keeping them. If you get the wrong people in the job this book takes you through the processes to rectify the problem whilst reducing any complications.Smyth uses the analogy of personal (marriage) relationships to cleverly frame the relationships between employees and employers.
The book breaks everything down into simple terms and is full of useful tips on employing the right person and getting rid of the wrong person. We are taken from the initial stage of advertising for the right person through performance management and if necessary to Department of Labour mediation. One of the elements of the book is monitoring the employer /employee relationship so that the employees are provided the right atmosphere to keep them engaged, this way both sides benefit. The book recognizes that there are some workers that are doing the bare minimum to avoid being fired. Anyone who has read the 4 hour work week will know that Tim Ferris was disengaged in his paid job whilst he was researching his first online business. Disengaged people aren’t necessarily bad people they may be just misemployed. |

| A good resource for any kiwi employer to keep by their desk. Useful as an easy reference book for kiwi employees to ensure both parties are adding value to the relationship. | |||||
| What I liked about this book: | |||||
| The way the book methodically takes you through each of the stages of the processes. The book is not written as a text book which is why the language is more accessible to the non legal mind.The fact that he addresses that most employers feel they can’t get rid of bad employees without a difficult costly process; his step by step guides in this book dispel that myth. | |||||
| What I thought could have been improved in this book: | |||||
| As with other books which I have recommended I couldn’t find anything major to improve on. Should anyone else have a view on things that could have been improved please feel free to comment on my blog. | |||||

| Title: | Living the 80 / 20 Way | ||||
| Author: | Richard Koch is an entrepreneur and author of over a dozen books including The 80/20 Principle | ||||
| Category: |
|
||||
| What the book is about: | |||||
| Similar to Koch’s previous book (The 80 20 Principle) this book expands on the idea that 20% of our actions produce 80% of our results.Here we are shown that this well known business principle is just as relevant in every other area of our life. We are given plans and charts to guide us into working less whilst enjoying our life more.
Koch encourages us to be lazier in the areas that provide us the minimal (20% results) This isn’t just a book about efficiency; it’s about concentrating on the important areas of our lives. We are provided a three step plan to focus on the 20% of actions that give us the 80% of our results for each of the five areas of Self, Work & Success, Money, Relationships and the Simple Good Life. The process requires that we prioritize and then focus on one area at a time. We do not move onto the next area until we have completed the work on the first area. The main thing that we have to do to get the most out of this book is to Change our way of thinking into believing that Less is more. |

| A great addition to the library. | |||||
| What I liked about this book: | |||||
| As you’d expect in a book that is about focusing on smarter use of our time the book is short enough not to be padded out with unnecessary information but big enough to provide a plethora of resources. I liked the focus on happiness and the practical everyday uses that this principle can be adapted to. | |||||
| What I thought could have been improved in this book: | |||||
| It might seem a little pedantic but as he used pie charts to provide pictorial clarity, it would have been more beneficial if the charts had been better labelled and printed in colour instead of grey and white. To me the idea of a graph or chart is that it summarises information and in this case the lacking in detail meant a slight lack of clarity for me. | |||||

| Title: | Vital Friends | ||||
| Author: | Tom Rath Has worked for Gallup for over 12 years (an organization world renowned for “Gallup Polls”), he is also Co author of “How Full is Your Bucket”. | ||||
| Category: |
|
||||
| What the book is about: | |||||
| The book concentrates on the benefits that we receive from our closest friends.The term friend is now over used, with the advent of Facebook and other social networks, slight acquaintances are now classed as friends. Vital (True) friends are people that bring something essential to our lives.
Here vital friends are split into eight categories Builders, Champions, Collaborators, Companions, Connectors, Mind Openers Navigators & Energizers. Each of the categories is covered in depth in regard to their benefits and how best to profit from their strengths. Anyone purchasing the book is provided with a unique code that allows them access to a website and allows them to catalogue their own friends into the different categories. The book observes the fact that nowadays we concentrate a lot on self development and personal growth but should spend more time in fostering one on one friendships. We are also informed that in our search for a work life balance it isn’t that easy to have a nice clean demarcation between our work and our family life. An argument before we leave the house for work can start us in a negative spiral for the day and a negative influence at work can follow through into our home life. |
|||||
| Would I buy this book: |
YES |
||||
| It provides different ideas not found on most self development books | |||||
| What I liked about this book: | |||||
| The knowledge that in several United States organisations they openly look to restrict fraternizing between co-workers (Even going as far as having confidential informant phone lines) yet research shows best friends at work can result in higher levels of worker engagement.Higher levels of engagement at work mean more productive satisfied workers.
I found it interesting the impact that friends have on our diet and other aspects of our well being. Best Friends with healthy diets and healthy lifestyles tend to foster healthy diets and lifestyles in ourselves, whilst best friends who have a predominantly unhealthy diet have an adverse affect on us. |
|||||
| What I thought could have been improved in this book: | |||||
| I understand the reason to concentrate on the eight categories but I would rather have seen more of the book on other areas of the subject. | |||||

| Author: | Tom Rath has worked for Gallup for over 12 years (an organization world renowned for “Gallup Polls”) ,he co authored this book with Donald O Clifton | ||||
| Category: |
|
||||
| What the book is about: | |||||
| The Bucket in the title is our personal emotional bucket which can be filled with either positive or negative inputs. Tom uses the polls of over 5 million contributors, to focus on the benefits of positive inputs to our lives.
The principles in this book can be used to enrich our individual lives or even to create a work atmosphere where the team are more engaged in the business. Using polls from such diverse groups as school children and nuns he shows how positive feedback at the right level can help people prosper and actually live longer. We are told that we should concentrate on what is right with people instead of what is wrong. |

| A short easy to read book that provides a simple message. | |||||
| What I liked about this book: | |||||
| I liked the fact that false praise is seen to have more of a negative effect than a straight negative comment. I really resonated with the idea that we are very specific when we provide criticism but pretty general when it comes to praise.I found it interesting the high percentage of people surveyed that would concentrate on their child’s lowest school grade instead of its highest. | |||||
| What I thought could have been improved in this book: | |||||

| Title: | The One Minute Apology | ||||
| Author: | Ken Blanchard is a world renowned speaker and leadership author and along with co author Margret Mc Bride produces this addition to the One Minute Manager collection of books. | ||||
| Category: |
|
||||
| What the book is about: | |||||
| In the same vein of the other “One Minute Manager” books, the message in the book is presented to the reader by means of a parable.In this parable, the president of a company gets into difficulty and our hero (the presidents young assistant), finds the solution to the problem.
The assistant is initially disillusioned because the president has had a meeting where he has blown off the board and the assistant feels this has lead to a loss in their confidence. The Crux of the story is that the assistant contacts the one minute manager (a friend of his father) and is coached over a weekend that by openness and a sincere apology the president can renew his boards’ confidence in him. The apology must be sincere (deep) and portray to the wronged parties that you are experiencing remorse. Our journey through the parable is designed to point out the qualities that are found in great leaders. |
|||||
| Would I buy this book: |
NO |
||||
| The content reiterates common sense values and if you are already exhibiting those values you don’t need it. | |||||
| What I liked about this book: | |||||
| As a leadership book it has a focus on the qualities of openness, integrity and honesty that we should be exhibiting.I liked the fact that we are told any apologies need to be specific and not just a general “I’m sorry”. | |||||
| What I thought could have been improved in this book: | |||||
| Although it was a pleasant enough yarn I thought it was a bit light on content.Yes the title is the one minute apology and yes the book focuses on giving a sincere apology but the message seemed weak to me.
I’d like to think that any leader worth is salt exhibits these traits (for those that don’t I feel they wouldn’t read the book anyway). |

| Title: | Failing Forward | ||||
| Author: | John C Maxwell, the world renowned expert on leadership and an evangelical pastor adds this to the list of over thirty books that he has authored. | ||||
| Category: | Business | ||||
| What the book is about: | |||||
| Here we are presented with a book that covers (in depth) the subject of how to benefit from failure.We are provided a 15 step program to focusing on failure as a tool in your arsenal rather than a permanent obstacle.
The first step states that “There is a major difference between the average person and high achievers”, that difference being their view on failure. In previous books such as “The Winning Attitude”, Maxwell alluded to the idea that failure isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Here the whole book focused on the premise that Failure is your friend or your enemy and you get to decide which. |
|||||
| Would I buy this book: |
YES |
||||
| A great addition to the library | |||||
| What I liked about this book: | |||||
| Some great quotes such as: “THE MAN WHO NEVER MADE A MISTAKE NEVER MADE ANYTHING”.Unlike his previous books where the examples seemed to be primarily based on bible characters, here he dealt with explaining his point using everyday folk.
I think we all need to know that it’s okay to fail sometimes, and here we have a book that actually encourages us to fail more. |
|||||
| What I thought could have been improved in this book: | |||||

| Title: | The Winning Attitude | ||||
| Author: | John C Maxwell, the world renowned expert on leadership (and an evangelical pastor) adds this to thelist of over thirty books that he has authored. | ||||
| Category: |
|
||||
| What the book is about: | |||||
| As you would expect from the title, this book focuses on our attitudes. The idea is that a positive attitude is a winning attitude.We are told that our attitudes are a matter of choice and as such we can choose to change our attitude if it isn’t providing us the results we require.
The benefits of our positive attitude and identifying this in others can provide us with a more successful organisation. Combining this with your other leadership skills to foster the attitude in your workforce can make your business stand out amongst the crowd. Developing your positive attitude can help produce great results not just in business but in all areas of your life. |
|||||
| Would I buy this book: |
NO |
||||
| There are lots of books out there on attitude and although this had some good information it is not one of the best. | |||||
| What I liked about this book: | |||||
| The Quote “Others can stop you temporarily but you are the only one that can do it permanently”. I liked the analogies around flying a plane and the focuses on getting help where required.
The way it identifies failures along the journey as learning’s that will guide us (instead of roadblocks) to our success |
|||||
| What I thought could have been improved in this book: | |||||
| As Maxwell is an evangelical pastor you may expect there to be some references to the bible.Unfortunately I found the numerous bible stories overrode the message of the book.
I feel a more balanced book would have made it more amenable to a larger audience |
