This book is about following our passions, breaking the old rules and leading groups of like minded people (our tribes).

It expands on the differences between leaders and managers and the fact that in today’s modern world we are all potential leaders.

The old feudal leadership model was propagated around a leader (or King) surrounded by “YES” men. Today we are surrounded by people who like to make up their own minds.

To become leaders of the new tribes we need to be heretics. Modern day heretics are people who are willing to change the status quo and have realised that safe can no longer be classed as secure.

The thing that stops most people form becoming leaders is fear, people just don’t like change. They will work in a business and even though it may be going bankrupt they refuse to leave because they wish to maintain the status quo.

We are told that businesses such as the record industry are going to fail if they refuse to adopt new methods (Believing they can maintain the status quo of their old distribution models).

He coins the term sheepwalking, “the concept of hiring people who have been raised to be obedient, giving them brain dead jobs and enough fear in an effort to keep them in line”. Leaders of the new tribes have a responsibility to break out of the sheepwalking mode!

The tribe is defined as “a group of people connected to a leader and connected to an idea”.

The size of the tribe can vary but a small tribe is not necessarily a bad thing. The people we exclude from our group can add as much to its strength as the people we include as a small tribe can provide exclusivity.

“If you want to sell just one product you may get away with an overnight success but if you wish customers to return you need to provide value”. The tribe theme is very much about niches and catering for our specific segment of the market.

We are told that it is not just our right but our obligation to become leaders of a tribe.

Senator Bill Bradley’s definition of a movement is having three elements: “1. A Narrative, 2. A connection, 3. Something to Do”. The book tells us that too often organizations concentrate only on the third.

This New Zealand book is a practical guide to getting the right people in the right job and keeping them. If you get the wrong people in the job this book takes you through the processes to rectify the problem whilst reducing any complications.Smyth uses the analogy of personal (marriage) relationships to cleverly frame the relationships between employees and employers.

The book breaks everything down into simple terms and is full of useful tips on employing the right person and getting rid of the wrong person. We are taken from the initial stage of advertising for the right person through performance management and if necessary to Department of Labour mediation.

One of the elements of the book is monitoring the employer /employee relationship so that the employees are provided the right atmosphere to keep them engaged, this way both sides benefit.

The book recognizes that there are some workers that are doing the bare minimum to avoid being fired.

Anyone who has read the 4 hour work week will know that Tim Ferris was disengaged in his paid job whilst he was researching his first online business. Disengaged people aren’t necessarily bad people they may be just misemployed.

The book concentrates on the benefits that we receive from our closest friends. The term friend is now over used, with the advent of Facebook and other social networks, slight acquaintances are now classed as friends. Vital (True) friends are people that bring something essential to our lives.

Here vital friends are split into eight categories Builders, Champions, Collaborators, Companions, Connectors, Mind Openers Navigators & Energizers. Each of the categories is covered in depth in regard to their benefits and how best to profit from their strengths.

Anyone purchasing the book is provided with a unique code that allows them access to a website and allows them to catalogue their own friends into the different categories.

The book observes the fact that nowadays we concentrate a lot on self development and personal growth but should spend more time in fostering one on one friendships.

We are also informed that in our search for a work life balance it isn’t that easy to have a nice clean demarcation between our work and our family life. An argument before we leave the house for work can start us in a negative spiral for the day and a negative influence at work can follow through into our home life.

In the same vein of the other “One Minute Manager” books, the message in the book is presented to the reader by means of a parable. In this parable, the president of a company gets into difficulty and our hero (the presidents young assistant), finds the solution to the problem.

The assistant is initially disillusioned because the president has had a meeting where he has blown off the board and the assistant feels this has lead to a loss in their confidence.

The Crux of the story is that the assistant contacts the one minute manager (a friend of his father) and is coached over a weekend that by openness and a sincere apology the president can renew his boards’ confidence in him.

The apology must be sincere (deep) and portray to the wronged parties that you are experiencing remorse.

Our journey through the parable is designed to point out the qualities that are found in great leaders.

As a leadership book it has a focus on the qualities of openness, integrity and honesty that we should be exhibiting.I liked the fact that we are told any apologies need to be specific and not just a general “I’m sorry”.

Although it was a pleasant enough yarn I thought it was a bit light on content.Yes the title is the one minute apology and yes the book focuses on giving a sincere apology but the message seemed weak to me.

I’d like to think that any leader worth is salt exhibits these traits (for those that don’t I feel they wouldn’t read the book anyway).
