Title: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Author: Stephen R Covey is a past professor (At Brigham Young University) as the professor of organisational behaviour and business studies. He is the author of several books and this is one of his most famous.

Category:
  • Business
  • Self Development

What the book is about:

As you would expect from the title the book discusses the seven habits in depth. The habits encompass all areas of our life (And not just our work).1. Be Proactive, 2. Begin with the end in mind, 3. Put first things first, 4. Think Win/Win, 5. Seek first to understand, Then to be understood, 6.Synergize, 7. Sharpening the saw.

The habits are to be addressed in their specific order. The first three habits are character habits and the next three are personality habits. It is important to build a strong foundation in our character before we progress to our personality.

The method to the seventh habit is Learn it, Do it and then Teach it.

Instead of continuing to cut a tree down with a blunt saw it would make sense to stop cutting and take the time sharpen the saw before continuing. In the same vein, habit seven is about taking the time to preserve and enhance our assets of physical, spiritual, mental and emotional well being instead of continuing blindly on our current paths.

He compares the principles in the book to a lighthouse in that they don’t move either. There is a part in the book where the captain of a large ship is signalling an approaching boat to move (It turns out the approaching boat is actually a lighthouse),

Would I buy this book:

YES

A wealth of resources that clarifies its points with simplified diagrams.

What I liked about this book:

I liked his example of paradigm shifts (at the start of the book), the way his view went from irritation at the unruly children on the tube to wanting to help the father when he found out their mother had just died.

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

As a worldwide best seller I couldn’t find anything major to improve on. Should anyone else have a view on things that could have been improved, please feel free to comment on my blog.

Title: How to get Your Ideas Adopted (And Change the World)

Author: Anne Miller has been an engineer for over twenty five years. Being a woman engineer in the early days was pioneering and so she is used to introducing new ideas.

Category:
  • Business
  • Self Development

What the book is about:

Here we have a resource that gives us guidance on getting our ideas across to other people. The author’s background as a creative engineer has given her years of experience (of both successes and failures) in influencing the adoption of concepts and ideas by society and individuals.

The book is split into eight sections:

The Challenge of ideas, Understanding our creativity, Engaging with reality, Blind, Opening our eyes, Frozen, Interested and Integrated.

There is a section on the Myers Briggs personality test (That allows us to roughly gauge our personality) which gives some insight into our potential biases in relation to our profiles. The development of different areas of our personality can also influence our levels of acceptance.

At the back of the book Miller provides a table that allows us to compare the ideas we liked best (within each section) against her favourites. Our personal favourites will depend on our different personalities, experience and ideas.

One of my favourites was the fact that even the likes of Edison and Archimedes didn’t have plain sailing in their creative paths. The fact the Archimedes was in the bath before is well known inspiration surfaced gives some insight into this.

Would I buy this book:

NO

Although there is a lot of interesting information in the book I found the presentation and the general feel of the book made it an unpleasant read.

What I liked about this book:

The comment that we all have creativity in us but it might have been stifled at an early age (perhaps something as simple as a music teacher telling us that we had no creativity when we where just children).

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

A larger font and better text spacing would have made it a lot easier to read.

  Title: Meatball Sundae

Author: Seth Godin is a modern day marketing guru and the author of over a dozen books.

Category:
  • Business
  • Marketing

What the book is about:

The book is primarily about the differences between old style and new style marketing.  As you would expect from a book on marketing it has a memorable title! We are told of four  industrial revolutions, The first being 1760-1840, the second 1840-1950, The third being the era of mass marketing for wants instead of needs and the fourth revolution being today’s new modern marketing trends.

The meatball in the title is the previous mass marketing of everyday products to people. The sundae (with its various options for additions) is just like the new marketing opportunities (blogs etc).

Old style marketers think they can just bolt on the new marketing to the old products, hence the disjointed image of a meatball with a sundae on top.

He is not advocating against selling average products to average people he is just indicating that this will not provide enough growth.

Previous marketing was about suppliers capitalizing on the products they already had, this is not enough now and synchronizing the product with the marketing (and our client’s requirements) is the way ahead.

He uses the comparison of a book publisher (who is always seeking new readers for new writers) and a magazine editor (who is seeking new articles for his existing readers) to bring home one of the differences between old and new marketing.

The main body of the book is split into 14 current trends (trends that we must monitor if we wish to continue to grow as an organization).

Would I buy this book:

YES

Another great book from Godin that provides great insight into modern marketing.

What I liked about this book:

I liked the way he talked about Josiah Wedgewood being the father of marketing. He built one of the first brands, put the Russian pottery on show prior to its shipping and had sales people work on commission.

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

Although the contents page is pretty extensive I would have liked an index at the back of the book.

  Title: Eat That Frog

Author: Brian Tracy is an internationally renowned self help author and speaker. He has published over forty books and presented many courses

Category:
  • Business
  • Time Management

What the book is about:

This is a book about time management and provides twenty one ways to overcome one of its main enemies “Procrastination”.The title of the book refers to the idea that eating a frog as an action would be very unpleasant.

If the first action (Your personal frog eating) that you complete each day is your worst possible task, any further tasks you undertake will seem easy.

The frog is an analogy for each individual’s event (that they are procrastinating about) and each individual must identify their own specific frog before they can eat it.

Goal setting is an important practice for time management and we are told that we need clarity and definition in what we are trying to achieve to help us proceed.

We are advised that just like any skill that we wish to develop, time management must be practised regularly.

As time management is about efficiency (more done in less time) it is of no surprise that there is a section on the 80 / 20 rule.

Starting the day with high value tasks until this becomes a habit is also a useful tip.

The strategies provided are very much in the vein of a Nike “Just do it” attitude.

Would I buy this book:

YES

A concise reference book that provides many tools to assist in developing the skills of time management.

What I liked about this book:

The quote from Steven Covey: “Before you start scrambling up the ladder of success make sure that it is leaning against the correct building”

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

As with other books which I have recommended, I couldn’t find anything major to improve on. Should anyone else have a view on things that could have been improved please feel free to comment on my blog.

Author: Og Mandino is one of the most widely read, self help and inspirational author in the world. This is only on of his thirteen plus books.

Category: Self Help

What the book is about:

As in several of his previous books the author provides us with a parable that gives guidance on how we can succeed as individuals. At the beginning of this story we are introduced to a rich American businessman who is visiting London at the time of transatlantic Concorde flights.

During his visit he reflects on his previous time in England.

The bulk of the story covers his military service including his second world war bombing missions from England.

During the war he spent his limited downtime in the company of an elderly lady who taught him the principles of success.

The lessons she taught him were based on the teachings of the likes of Napoleon hill and other such mentors that she called her friends in high places.

Would I buy this book:

YES

A Short paperback that leaves you feeling good.

What I liked about this book:

It was more up to date than some of the author’s previous books. Although there was an underlying theme of the seeds of success throughout, there was still enough of a background story to keep me interested.

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

Title: A Complaint is a Gift

Author: Janelle Barlow is an international speaker of over thirty years; along with a degree in psychology she also has a reputation as a management specialist. Janelle collaborated with Claus Møller (another renowned management specialist) to author this book.

Category:
  • Business
  • Customer Service

What the book is about:

The book is essentially a text book on improving customer service by utilizing customer complaints for constructive criticism. We are provided a plethora of information on how to react to different situations and ways to provide a more productive feedback system

There is a separate section on customer feedback that teaches staff how to decide whether it is personal criticism (on their performance ) or targeted at the company

The philosophy of the book is about providing quality service delivery, utilizing the complaints of customers to improve services and maintain customers

We are provided an eight step formula for customer satisfaction

1 Say thank you,2 Explain why you appreciate the complainant’s feedback,3 Apologize for the mistake, 4 Promise to do something about the problem immediately (and accept responsibility),5 Ask for the necessary information, 6 correct the mistake promptly,7 check that you have achieved customer satisfaction, 8 Prevent future mistakes.

If companies are sending response letters they are advised not to just send a generic blurb response but to actually address the customer’s specific complaints.

In today’s information era the best way to utilize this philosophy on the internet is to engage customers in real conversations (blogs are ideal tools in this area).

When addressing feedback on the internet, even automated responses (as customers post complaints) need to have a personal feel.  Responses such as “While we can’t get back to you personally we value your input” don’t give the impression that the complaint will be actioned. We should provide a personal email that addresses their problem and is signed with a real person’s name.

As we read the book a lot of the suggestions seem common sense but as we are advised that since it was first published over ten years ago there is still sub standard service out there, it is apparently not so common.

Would I buy this book:

YES

A valuable reference book

What I liked about this book:

I liked the section at the back of the book that advises you how to complain, so that you aren’t just whinging but providing a quality complaint that will help improve things for everyone.A quality complaint has more chance of a quality outcome.

Title: The Richest Man in Babylon

Author: George S Clason was born in 1874 and besides writing this modern day classic in 1920, he founded the Clason Map Company (Which published the first US & Canadian Atlas in 1926).

Category:
  • Self Development
  • Finance

What the book is about:

The book takes us through a series of parables set in ancient Babylon. As we travel through the various stories we are taught skills that are designed to make us rich.It is a fact that the laws which govern money today are the same as the laws that governed money six thousand years ago in Babylon.

There are seven rules to the acquisition of money (I have changed some of the words):

1. Start by filling your wallet, 2. Control your expenditure, 3. Use your cash to earn more cash, 4. Protect your assets, 5. Choose the house you purchase wisely, 6. Ensure your future income, 7 increase your ability to earn.

Within the chapters the seven rules are further broken down with guides for us to achieve the required results. We are given Seven Cures for a lean purse (To help with rule 1) and the five laws of gold (to help us with rule 3).

Would I buy this book:

YES

An age old classic that is recommended by one of my favourite Mentors (Jim Rohn), that I read over and over again.

What I liked about this book:

The simple story format makes it a light read whilst easily getting across the financial principles.

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

This is only a comment and not a criticism but even though the stories are designed to have the feel of Babylon six thousand years ago, as it was written in 1920 I think the language could have been updated.

  Title: Retire Young Retire Rich

Author: Robert Kiyosaki, the world renowned entrepreneur and creator of the “Rich Dad” brand, is assisted by his business partner Sharon Lechter in this addition to the series.

Category:
  • Business
  • Personal Development

What the book is about:

Although you may expect from the title that this is a book about retirement, it is also about the differences between rich and poor and the way they focus on different financial tools. If we are to achieve this rich retirement whilst we are still young  we must increase our skills in the areas of business, finance and money management.

Kiyosaki talks about the fact that it wasn’t until he and his wife set the plan to retire young and rich. If we intend to retire young and rich we need to plan.

Anyone can reach these goals if they adopt the following six habits: Hire A book keeper, Build a winning team, Constantly expand your content & context, Keep growing up, Be willing to fail more and Listen to yourself.

In order to achieve great wealth, either in real estate, paper assets or some other area, we need to build an asset base.

Although the tax breaks info is specific to the US market he does advise readers to consult a professional financial adviser and the ratios discussed are generic worldwide.

The invention of government pensions and other safety nets was to supply the very needy in the industrial age, in today’s current information age we need to be more self reliant.

The focus like some of the other Rich Dad books is leverage.

Would I buy this book:

YES

As with most of the Rich dad series the principles are relatively timeless.

What I liked about this book:

I liked the references to the tortoise and the hare. Despite the fact that the book is talking about retiring young, there is still the insinuation that if you adopt the strategies and continue to improve your financial skills you can succeed even if you start later in life.

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

A classic book in the series and I am happy to leave this section for others to pick any faults.

Title: Secrets of the Millionaire Mind

Author: T. Harv Eker is a multimillionaire, motivational speaker and the founder of a mobile business school (Peak Potentials Training).

Category:
  • Business
  • Personal Development

What the book is about:

As you may expect by the title, the premise of the book is that Millionaires think differently to other people. The book provides seventeen “Wealth Files”, which are examples of how the Rich think differently to poor and middle class people.

We are told that “our current money blueprints will determine our financial success”; the good thing is that we can reprogram our money blueprints.

Our financial blueprints are set by the information we have been exposed to along the way. Invariably our parent’s and other influential people in our lives have ingrained their own views of money in us.

Our subconscious mind determines our blueprints and as these strongly ingrained beliefs can override logic, actions are required to train the subconscious. The book has a four step process to this training: Awareness, Understanding, Disassociation and Declaration.

We are provided affirmations (Called declarations in the book) and they are accompanied by the actions of touching your head and your heart whilst speaking them. By physical activity as well as saying the words it provides more emphasis.

He talks about the fact that certain people may not believe in these theories, because they can’t physically see the millionaire mindset. People pay their electricity bills even though they can only see the results of the electricity and not the electricity itself.

We are advised to have five accounts for our finances, 10% Long Term Savings, 10% Investing, 10% Education, 10% Play & 50% Necessities. The mathematicians amongst us will have noticed we have only accounted for 90%, the last 10% is to be given away to a good cause.

Would I buy this book:

YES

Not just a book about attitudes but about changing mindsets.

What I liked about this book:

I liked the start of the book where Eker says “don’t believe anything I say”, referring to the fact that these are his experiences which we can use as a tool but it is our choice whether to use them and if so how.The statement that no thought lives in your head rent free, thoughts are either beneficial or detrimental to your financial health.

Eker’s definition of an entrepreneur being: “someone who solves problems for people for a profit”

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

As with other books which I have recommended I couldn’t find anything major to improve on. Should anyone else have a view on things that could have been improved please feel free to comment on my blog.
