  • Self Development

What the book is about:

The Bucket in the title is our personal emotional bucket which can be filled with either positive or negative inputs.  Tom uses the polls of over 5 million contributors, to focus on the benefits of positive inputs to our lives.

The principles in this book can be used to enrich our individual lives or even to create a work atmosphere where the team are more engaged in the business.

Using polls from such diverse groups as school children and nuns he shows how positive feedback at the right level can help people prosper and actually live longer.

We are told that we should concentrate on what is right with people instead of what is wrong.

Would I buy this book:

YES

A short easy to read book that provides a simple message.

What I liked about this book:

I liked the fact that false praise is seen to have more of a negative effect than a straight negative comment.  I really resonated with the idea that we are very specific when we provide criticism but pretty general when it comes to praise.I found it interesting the high percentage of people surveyed that would concentrate on their child’s lowest school grade instead of its highest.

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

As an audio book this lasts around 45 minutes and with such a great resource I wish it could have gone on a little longer.

  Title: The One Minute Apology

Author: Ken Blanchard is a world renowned speaker and leadership author and along with co author Margret Mc Bride produces this addition to the One Minute Manager collection of books.

Category:
  • Business
  • Management

What the book is about:

In the same vein of the other “One Minute Manager” books, the message in the book is presented to the reader by means of a parable. In this parable, the president of a company gets into difficulty and our hero (the presidents young assistant), finds the solution to the problem.

The assistant is initially disillusioned because the president has had a meeting where he has blown off the board and the assistant feels this has lead to a loss in their confidence.

The Crux of the story is that the assistant contacts the one minute manager (a friend of his father) and is coached over a weekend that by openness and a sincere apology the president can renew his boards’ confidence in him.

The apology must be sincere (deep) and portray to the wronged parties that you are experiencing remorse.

Our journey through the parable is designed to point out the qualities that are found in great leaders.

Would I buy this book:

NO

The content reiterates common sense values and if you are already exhibiting those values you don’t need it.

What I liked about this book:

As a leadership book it has a focus on the qualities of openness, integrity and honesty that we should be exhibiting.I liked the fact that we are told any apologies need to be specific and not just a general “I’m sorry”.

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

Although it was a pleasant enough yarn I thought it was a bit light on content.Yes the title is the one minute apology and yes the book focuses on giving a sincere apology but the message seemed weak to me.

I’d like to think that any leader worth is salt exhibits these traits (for those that don’t I feel they wouldn’t read the book anyway).

  Title: The Difference Maker

Author: John C Maxwell, the world renowned expert on leadership and an evangelical pastor adds this to the list of over thirty books that he has authored.

Category:
  • Personal Development
  • Self Help

What the book is about:

This book is about the difference a positive attitude can make to your results.Unlike his previous books here Maxwell recognizes that attitude isn’t everything.

Previously he held attitude above other skills, here he recognises that competence is more important than confidence.

Previously he would have changed staff for attitude, now he chooses for competence and then if necessary looks to improve their attitude.

The premise of the book is that although a positive attitude isn’t everything if you had two people of equal competence, the positive attitude would make the difference to success.

You don’t have to change all of your attitudes, just the major areas that are affecting you negatively

This book talks about the five obstacles to a positive attitude in depth and how to overcome them.

The five Obstacles being Discouragement, Change, Problems, Fear and Failure.

Would I buy this book:

YES

The focus on overcoming obstacles gives this the edge on other attitude books.

What I liked about this book:

I like the fact that the difference maker is a balanced book and unlike other books on attitude this one isn’t so pollyannish.I liked the analogy that life is a hand of cards (dealt to us) and that our attitude is how we choose to play those cards.

I liked the quote the problem with experience is you usually get it after you need it.

The exercises where very user friendly in the five obstacle areas to overcome.

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

Of all the books out there on positive attitude this is one of the more useful. I was hard pushed to find anything I thought could have been improved on.I will therefore leave this for others to address.

  Title: Failing Forward

Author: John C Maxwell, the world renowned expert on leadership and an evangelical pastor adds this to the list of over thirty books that he has authored.

Category: Business

What the book is about:

Here we are presented with a book that covers (in depth) the subject of how to benefit from failure. We are provided a 15 step program to focusing on failure as a tool in your arsenal rather than a permanent obstacle.

The first step states that “There is a major difference between the average person and high achievers”, that difference being their view on failure.

In previous books such as “The Winning Attitude”, Maxwell alluded to the idea that failure isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Here the whole book focused on the premise that Failure is your friend or your enemy and you get to decide which.

Would I buy this book:

YES

A great addition to the library

What I liked about this book:

Some great quotes such as: “THE MAN WHO NEVER MADE A MISTAKE NEVER MADE ANYTHING”.Unlike his previous books where the examples seemed to be primarily based on bible characters, here he dealt with explaining his point using everyday folk.

I think we all need to know that it’s okay to fail sometimes, and here we have a book that actually encourages us to fail more.

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

As It did what It said on the label, I feel no need in placing a comment here just to try and pick a fault in the book.

  Title: The Winning Attitude

Author: John C Maxwell, the world renowned expert on leadership (and an evangelical pastor) adds this to thelist of over thirty books that he has authored.

Category:
  • Business
  • Leadership

What the book is about:

As you would expect from the title, this book focuses on our attitudes. The idea is that a positive attitude is a winning attitude. We are told that our attitudes are a matter of choice and as such we can choose to change our attitude if it isn’t providing us the results we require.

The benefits of our positive attitude and identifying this in others can provide us with a more successful organisation.

Combining this with your other leadership skills to foster the attitude in your workforce can make your business stand out amongst the crowd.

Developing your positive attitude can help produce great results not just in business but in all areas of your life.

Would I buy this book:

NO

There are lots of books out there on attitude and although this had some good information it is not one of the best.

What I liked about this book:

The Quote “Others can stop you temporarily but you are the only one that can do it permanently”. I liked the analogies around flying a plane and the focuses on getting help where required.

The way it identifies failures along the journey as learning’s that will guide us (instead of roadblocks) to our success

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

As Maxwell is an evangelical pastor you may expect there to be some references to the bible.Unfortunately I found the numerous bible stories overrode the message of the book.

I feel a more balanced book would have made it more amenable to a larger audience

  Title: No Opportunity Wasted (NOW)

Author: Phil Keoghan a kiwi with a thirst for adrenalin and the host of such TV shows as “The amazing race” was assisted by Warren Berger to compile this book.

Category:
  • Inspirational
  • Self Development

What the book is about:

At the age of nineteen Phil was in a near death diving situation that made him re-evaluate his life and since that time he has tried to wring the most out of life. This Book is a guide for anyone wanting to experience more out of life. Split into eight sections including Facing your Fear, Testing your limits and Rediscovering your Childhood it addresses the excuses that we use to limit pursuing new experiences.

We are provided with examples of how others have pursued the items on their life lists as well as plans to compile our own list

Would I buy this book:

YES

Handy as a paperback to keep with you as a reminder to get over yourself.

What I liked about this book:

I liked the premise that you are never to old to try new experiences.Initially I thought it was going to be just another one of those books that aims to motivate through examples of how others have succeeded.

I felt the fact that it gave a step by step guide to setting personal life lists made it a more accessible for a wider audience. I definitely used it to create my list.

What I thought could have been improved in this book:

The content was good but I found the layout of the book a little annoying.I could see where they where going interspersing examples of how others had succeeded in the individual sections but the shading and placement of the explanations interrupted the feel of the book a bit for me.
